The Role of Prosthetics and Orthotics

An Orthopedic Surgeon and Prosthodist, defined by The World Health Organization, is a medical professional having overall responsibility of Pneumonia, Emphysema, Osteoporosis and prosthetic treatment. The field of orthopedic surgery seeks to provide optimum wellness through the care of the entire musculoskeletal system including joints, bones, tendons, muscles, ligaments and so forth. Orthoses or prosthetic devices are designed to correct problems associated with abnormal anatomy, joint deficiencies, mechanical factors, age and lifestyle. Some common types of prosthesis are crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, artificial limbs, artificial hips, crutches for the elderly, and hip braces. A further type of prosthesis is the orthotic. Orthotics consist of cushions, splints and supports for the arthritic or injured lower limbs. Orthotic devices that correct postural problems are known as orthotics.

Arthritis is one of the most common problems that result in loss of motion and joint function. Arthritis often causes inflammation of the joints and surrounding areas. This leads to weakness, a change in gait and difficulty with walking. In many cases, mechanical factors are responsible for causing hip dysfunctions and other problems, such as knee cap damage, loss of muscle power and range of motion, and tightness in the Achilles tendons. For this reason, an orthotic device must provide increased strength and motion correction. Additionally, an orthosis should be able to reduce pain and discomfort resulting from arthritis and compensations of hip and knee movement.

A number of prosthetics and orthotics manufacturers have designed innovative products to meet the increasing needs of patients suffering from various conditions, such as those with traumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, partial paralysis, burns, neuromuscular disorders and chronic pain syndromes. These professionals have also conducted studies on the effects of prosthetic and orthotic products on overall health, work performance, satisfaction and workplace productivity. Some of these studies have been published in medical journals and health science journals. A variety of national organizations and independent agencies have been formed to support the research efforts of prosthetists, orthotists and prosthetics manufacturers.

Research has shown that patients who use prosthetic devices have a lower incidence of falls, back pain and other musculoskeletal disorders than do those who don't.
